Today, we are asking for your support. Join our letter-writing campaign and call on Mall 205 property management to meet with day laborers and work together toward a safe and fair solution.

For years, day laborers have gathered in the parking lot outside Home Depot at Mall 205 to seek work and connect with homeowners, contractors, and others looking to hire. These workers build, repair, clean, move, and landscape throughout Portland. They support their families, strengthen our communities, and have made Mall 205 a trusted place where workers and employers can find one another.

Now, Mall 205 property management has forced them out. Workers are now scattered, employers are struggling to find them, and jobs have become harder to access. Day laborers are now gathering along SE Washington Street, a busy roadway that leaves them more exposed to traffic, unsafe hiring practices, harassment, wage theft, and immigration enforcement.

This displacement comes at a time when federal immigration enforcement has sharply increased across Oregon. For immigrant workers, being pushed into more exposed and isolated locations is not a small inconvenience. It creates real danger and makes it even harder for them to earn a living. But workers are not asking anyone to speak for them. They have come together, discussed what they want, and are leading this campaign.

Workers want to return to the location where they have sought work for years. They want management to meet with them directly. They are ready to discuss shared expectations for the space and negotiate a fair solution that protects safety without cutting them off from work.

Through Voz’s Adopt a Corner program, volunteers have been showing up at Mall 205, building relationships, sharing safety information, and following the workers’ direction. Now, the workers are asking the larger community to show up with them.

Join our letter-writing campaign and call on Mall 205 property management to come to the table.

We are asking community members to write to property management and demand that they:

1. Meet directly with worker representatives and Voz.

2. Work together with workers to establish a safe and agreed-upon hiring area.

3. Allow workers to return and seek employment without retaliation.

This is about more than a place to stand. It is about workers having the power, dignity, and right to provide for their families and build a future without being pushed aside.

Write a letter. Ask your friends and coworkers to write one too. Stand with day laborers and help us demand that Mall 205 property management work with workers toward a fair solution.
