Communities, not camps
We believe people seeking asylum should be housed in communities, not camps, barracks or barges. The newly-opened barracks in Crowborough, East Sussex and the planned Crowborough site in Inverness will be a costly, dangerous repeat of the mistakes that continue to be made in the ex-military barracks at RAF Wethersfield. The inhumane living conditions at these sites cause lasting harm and have been described as ‘quasi-detention‘ by a parliamentary inquiry. Meanwhile, these camps are becoming a magnet for those seeking to spread anti-migrant sentiment, putting individuals and communities at risk.
How people seeking asylum are housed is about more than providing shelter. It is emblematic of the UK’s vision of providing sanctuary to people seeking refuge. We want people seeking asylum to be welcomed as our neighbours, not warehoused in camps.
Wethersfield Must Close. Crowborough Must Close. Cameron must not open. People seeking safety must be housed in communities, not camps.
