Stop H. 4760 — Don’t Criminalize Medication Abortion in South Carolina

South Carolina lawmakers are considering H.4760, a dangerous bill that would further decimate abortion access by reclassifying Misoprostol and Mifepristone--two safe, effective, and widely used medications that are essential to modern healthcare in our state.

These drugs are not just used for abortion care. They are standard treatments for miscarriage management, postpartum hemorrhage, and other serious pregnancy complications. Doctors rely on them every day to provide timely, evidence-based care.

By adding these medications to the state's controlled substances list and attaching felony penalties to their possession and distribution, H.4760 injects fear and legal risk into healthcare settings. It threatens doctors, pharmacists, and entire healthcare systems with criminal consequences for providing medically necessary treatment--and delays care for patients when time matters most.

South Carolina already faces high maternal mortality rates and limited access to care, especially in rural communities. Criminalizing essential medications will make those outcomes worse--not better.

Healthcare decisions should be guided by medical experts and patient needs, not political ideology. H.4760 puts partisan politics above safety, and South Carolinians will be the ones to pay the price.
