Stop H.R. 22 - Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act
Our democracy works best when every eligible voter has an equal opportunity to participate. But H.R. 22, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, threatens that right by imposing new, unnecessary barriers to voter registration. This bill has already passed the U.S. House of Representatives and now heads to the Senate. We must urge our Senators to reject this harmful legislation and defend our voting rights.
H.R. 22 would require American citizens to present documents such as a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization paperwork to prove their citizenship status when registering to vote in federal elections. The reality is that more than 140 million U.S. citizens do not have a passport, and as many as 69 million women who have taken their spouse’s last name do not have a birth certificate matching their current legal name and would not be able to prove their identity to register to vote.
Additionally, under H.R. 22, these documents would need to be presented in person which would gut the voter registration methods many Americans rely on, including automatic voter registration, vote by mail, and online registration. This would disenfranchise rural, elderly, and working class Americans, who are less likely to have documents such as a passport, and make it more difficult for them to register to vote.
We need your help to stop House Resolution 22 and protect our communities' access to the ballot box! Contact Senator Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock today and urge them to oppose this bill. Our democracy depends on it!
