Stop Illegal Land Grabs in the Kurdistan Region
Indigenous Assyrians in the Kurdistan Region are victims to large-scale systemic land exploitations. The latest threat to the continued existence of the Assyrians in their ancient lands is coming directly from neighboring Kurdish tribes, with whom Assyrians only wish to live in a state of peace and mutual respect.
Since 2015, there have been numerous reports of Kurdish tribes, under the auspices of the Kurdistan Regional Government, forcefully stealing indigenous Assyrian land. The most recent case occured on May 10th, 2022, when local Assyrians in the village of Badaresh were left to defend their property from illegal land grabbing by a neighboring Kurdish tribe. When local Assyrian villagers protested and tried to protect their properties, the KRG police, known as Asayesh, retaliated by assaulting them and arresting the village mayor, Zaia Minas, and Assyrian advocate, James Albazi, a village resident who was filming the incident on social media.
This highlighted case is only one of hundreds that are continuously targeting and eroding Assyrian land rights and threatening the continued existence of Assyrians in their ancestral lands. We call on you to action!
