The Israeli Knesset is advancing a law to execute Palestinian prisoners by hanging, while Israelis convicted of the same crime get life in prison.

This is racialized capital punishment. Over two-thirds of the world's nations have abolished the death penalty. Israel itself has executed only one person in its entire history. Now it is resurrecting the gallows, for Palestinians only.

These detainees are not criminals. They are prisoners of a military occupation, protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention. Many should have been released long ago under signed agreements. Instead, they are held in what B'Tselem has documented as a network of torture camps, and now Israel wants the legal authority to hang them.

The minister driving this bill, Itamar Ben Gvir, convicted of incitement to racism under Israeli law, wore a noose pendant to parliament and handed out sweets after the vote.

And while Israel passes racial laws, America rewards it. Since October 2023, the United States has sent $21.7 billion in military aid, nearly six times the normal annual rate, on 800 transport planes and 140 ships carrying 90,000 tons of weapons.

The UN, Amnesty International, and even Israel's own Justice Ministry have called this law unlawful. The Fourth Geneva Convention prohibits it. But the bill is advancing, because Israel knows Washington won't stop it.
