On March 30, 2026, the Israeli Knesset passed a law mandating execution by hanging for Palestinians, while Israelis convicted of the same acts face, at most, life in prison.

This is racialized capital punishment. Israel has executed only two people in its history, the last in 1962. Now it is resurrecting the gallows for Palestinians only.

The people this law targets are prisoners of a military occupation, protected under the Fourth Geneva Convention. They will be tried in military courts that convict 96% of Palestinian defendants on confessions extracted under torture. At least 87 have already died in Israeli custody since October 2023. Once a death sentence is handed down, execution must follow within 90 days. There is no right of appeal.

The UN, the EU, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, and Israeli human rights organizations have all called the law unlawful and discriminatory. And while Israel writes apartheid into statute, Washington has sent more than $21 billion in military aid since October 2023 — nearly six times the pre-war rate.

Israel is moving forward because it believes Washington will not stop it.
