Stop the Anticorruption of Public Morals Act

HB 4938, the so-called “Anticorruption of Public Morals Act,” would bring some of the harshest censorship measures in the country. It criminalizes LGBTQ+ identity by banning any content that depicts a “disconnection between biology and gender,” while also sweeping ordinary creativity like ASMR, digital art, and writing into a regime of state control. The bill forces internet providers and platforms to act as censors, monitoring users, blocking VPNs, and reporting content under threat of massive fines. Communities already most at risk would be silenced, from queer youth seeking safe spaces online to adult creators whose livelihoods depend on open platforms. By equating gender expression and creativity with obscenity, Michigan lawmakers are laying the groundwork for broader repression of free speech, privacy, and equality.
