Stop the Columbus Sweep!
Columbus Park, by San Jose International Airport, is the largest encampment in San Jose. It is home to hundreds of people many who are working jobs but cannot afford the astronomical cost of rent and housing in San Jose. The residents of Columbus live without light, water, or a centralized dumpster. It is home to to some of the cities most vulnerable constituents including seniors, children, people with disabilities, members of the Black, Latino, and LGBTQ+ community. The sweep, which began on Monday 8/18, has caused people to lose important belongings, treasured pets, and loved ones. People have been forced to scatter throughout San Jose and the South Bay making it hard to provide aid for those desperately in need.
Write now to tell the San Jose mayor, city council, and homeless division staffers to:
1. Allow community members to assist our unhoused residents as the sweep continues
2. Offer immediately needs based housing to all current and former residents of Columbus
3. Provide immediate services, outreach, and personal storage to the current and former residents of Columbus
