Demand Congress do whatever it takes to stop Trump from demolishing the Kennedy Center now.
The Kennedy Center is a national cultural institution and a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Donald Trump and his handpicked board are now threatening its future.
After Trump’s allies tried to rename the Kennedy Center, a federal judge ruled that Congress had established its name in law and that the board could not unilaterally change it. Yet the board has continued pushing plans to place Trump’s name prominently on the complex, including proposals to credit him repeatedly on the building and rename the grounds “President Donald J. Trump Plaza.”
Now this:
In federal court filings, Trump’s Justice Department warned that if the board’s proposed two-year renovation cannot move forward, the board could choose to demolish the Kennedy Center and replace it with an outdoor amphitheater overlooking the Potomac.
Congress does not have to accept that threat. Lawmakers created the Kennedy Center, appropriated the federal money supporting its renovation, and have the authority to protect it.
Congress can prohibit taxpayer dollars from financing demolition, but we all know that alone is likely not enough. They must do whatever it takes to protect the Kennedy Center.
Nothing should be off the table. Congress can change the powers of the board, who can be on it, or how big it is. Congress can even abolish the board if needed to stop Trump and his board from destroying yet another piece of American history.
