Tell Congress: Block Trump’s Medical Debt Trap Now
Trump officials are floating a dangerous new health care scheme that would let insurance companies offer loans to patients who cannot afford massive deductibles or emergency care.
Instead of lowering costs, protecting ACA subsidies, or cracking down on insurance company greed, Trump wants sick people to borrow money from the same corporations already profiting from their premiums.
This plan would turn a medical crisis into a debt trap.
A person diagnosed with cancer, rushed into emergency surgery, or forced to seek urgent care could be told to take out a loan from their insurer before coverage fully kicks in. That debt would have to be repaid, likely with interest, adding even more pressure to families already drowning in medical bills.
More than one-third of American households already have medical debt. Premiums are rising. Deductibles are already crushing families. Trump’s answer adds more debt, worse coverage, and even more power for insurance companies.
Insurance companies should never be allowed to collect premiums, limit care, impose massive deductibles, and then make money by lending patients the cash they need to survive an emergency.
Congress must act now. Lawmakers should block any rule, waiver, or administrative policy that allows insurers to offer medical loans to their own patients. They must protect ACA affordability, lower out-of-pocket costs, and stop Trump from turning health care into a high-interest debt scheme.
