Support for The Ave for All Placemaking Pilot on University Way

The Ave, Activated

Dear Mayor Wilson,

I am writing to express my support for The Ave for All placemaking pilot on University Way in the University District, and my concern about the recent denial of its special event permit.

The Ave for All proposed to close one block of University Way to vehicles on two Saturdays this summer, creating a temporary pedestrian space for dining, music, community gathering, and connection. It was organized by community advocates, supported by many local businesses, and designed to demonstrate what a more walkable University Way could look like for the thousands of residents, students, and workers who call this neighborhood home.

We applied for a permit in February, but the Special Events Committee denied the permit just one week before the event, based on business opposition, despite acknowledging that the organizers met all notification requirements and raised no operational concerns. I am troubled by this outcome, particularly given that the U District already faces a documented deficit of more than five acres of public open space. Temporary activations like The Ave for All are not a luxury. They are one of the few tools available to a neighborhood that is growing faster than its public infrastructure.

More than 3,300 people voted for this vision at the U District Streetfair in 2022, 2024, and 2026. That is a clear and sustained expression of community will. I am asking your office to take an active interest in ensuring that the rescheduled pilot receives a fair and transparent review, and that the voices of residents and supporters carry equal weight in that process.

The U District deserves a street that works for everyone. I hope you will help make that possible.

Thank you for your time and your service to our city.

Sincerely,
