Dear President Shepard,
I am writing to ask that the University of Western Ontario support the PSAC Local 610 bargaining team and its demand that UWO negotiate an Extended Health and Dental Plan for its Postdoctoral Researchers.
The University of Western Ontario remains one of the few universities in Ontario that does not provide Postdoctoral Researchers with an extended Health and Dental Plan. Yet these are full-time employees with PhDs who contribute in significant ways to the research profile of the university. Some are also contributing to the struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic. The failure to provide these valuable employees with extended Health and Dental Benefits signals a lack of respect for their contributions to the university and, ultimately, is a stain on the university’s reputation.
While I understand that there may be limitations to what can be negotiated under the auspices of Bill 124, it is both possible and necessary to work within the constraints of the legislation to ensure that all Postdocs have extended Health and Dental Benefits. I ask that you direct the UWO bargaining team to engage in a meaningful way with the PSAC Local 610 team to ensure that UWO Postdoctoral Researchers are not left behind at a time when such benefits are sorely needed.
Respectfully,
