Support publicly-owned broadband for Gainesville, not private subsidies
This Thursday the dream of publicly-owned, affordable high-speed internet for Gainesville could be killed. We need your help to make sure that doesn’t happen.
Fill out your name and information and it will bring you to a pre-filled email you can send the commission or email them yourself at citycomm@cityofgainesville.org.
For years Gainesville has been studying how we make our city the most connected city in America, bringing affordable, fiber internet to everyone’s home. The results have shown it’s not just feasible, but a the clear solution for our community:
Bring lightning-fast, symmetrical fiber internet to homes across Gainesville
Would save the average family $419.88 per year
Creates over $73 million in profit for Gainesville
Provides low-cost internet for thousands of children to bridge the digital divide
In 2021 the Biden administration gave us the chance: the American Rescue Plan gave our city funds that can be used to create the first step of this system, focusing on our working-class neighborhoods first.
Now, Cox Communications is lobbying hard to stop it, and many on our commission are getting cold feet and trying to kill the plan. Please consider writing an email to the commission at citycomm@cityofgainesville.com or use our form that has a pre-made email you can edit/send. Also consider calling in at 1:00 on Thursday, March 3rd to speak on behalf of internet access.
