Today marks 1 year since the police murder of George Floyd. Since then, there have been marches and vigils, greater media attention to police brutality and racial injustice, and the gradual realization from politicians (still too gradual) that systemic change is needed.

This week is budget week in the MA Senate, and as the saying goes, a budget is a statement of values.

Can you call or email your state senator in support of these budget amendments to advance racial justice in the Commonwealth?

Amendment #367—One Year Prison Construction Moratorium, by Senator Comerford. Places a one-year pause on prison and jail construction in Massachusetts. Formerly incarcerated women are already leading the way by opposing the DOC’s plans for a new women’s prison and creating community-based solutions that address the root causes of incarceration.

Amendment #371—Extending CDC Eviction Protections, by Senator Jehlen. Extends the same eviction protections currently provided by the CDC eviction moratorium statewide until December 31, 2021. Amendment #371 is especially critical as other COVID-19 resources and protections are slated to end when the Massachusetts state of emergency is lifted.

Amendment #577—Vaccine Equity Benchmarks, by Senator Chang-Díaz. Requires that by July 31, 2021, the Administration shall establish a set of quantitative goals and benchmarks to define and achieve vaccine equity for residents of color and other populations disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

Amendment #660—Spending Accountability on Federal ICE Programs, by Senator Chang-Diaz. Requires the Sheriffs and the DOC to report quarterly on spending, costs, and revenues of 287(g) and IGSA (detainee bed) contracts with ICE.

Amendment #669—Harm Reduction for Congregate Facilities, by Senator Chang-Díaz. Funds the independent Ombuds office established in the FY21 budget to ensure the MA Department of Correction fulfills its legal obligation to decarcerate, as mandated by the Legislature last session.
