Support safety improvements on Lake Washington Blvd! (Phase 2)

This Spring, Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) released a proposed design for safety improvements on Lake Washington Boulevard. Together, we pushed them for more. Thanks to your advocacy, the scope of the project has now expanded significantly! However, the plan update removed the proposal for an All-Way Stop at Lake Park Drive S. and LWB (at Mount Baker Beach), so as to not inconvenience drivers.

Click through to send an email to city staff and elected leaders urging them to put safety first.

  1. Celebrate: Thank SPR staff for all of the traffic calming elements included in the proposed scope of work, which will make it safer for all of us to travel along Lake Washington Blvd, including the additional speed cushions and the new marked crossing at S Dawson St.

  2. Share your concerns that the designs still seems to prioritize car thru-traffic on a park street, including the elimination of the originally proposed all-way stop at Lake Park Drive S. and LWB (at Mount Baker Beach), and continuing to not include an all-way stop at 43rd Ave S (by Stan Sayers Memorial Park) despite recent, continued crashes at this dangerous intersection. Stop controlled intersections lower risk for people outside of vehicles, supports crossing opportunities, and improves street predictability for all.

  3. Push for better open streets events: Urge SPR to do more to bring in community partners, especially BIPOC led groups and businesses, for open streets events in 2025. Narrowing the branding this year to "bicycle weekends" did not acknowledge the popularity of the events with people walking, running, roller blading, and playing.

  4. Maintain long-term vision: The long-term planning for Lake Washington Boulevard must include different options for a real multi-use trail.

Thank you for your advocacy!

Join us on September 21-22 for the final Bicycle Weekend of the season! Lake Washington Boulevard will be closed to vehicle thru-traffic from 10:00 am Saturday to 6:00 pm Sunday from Lake Park Drive S to Seward Park (parking lot access will be maintained).
