Support the City Council Resolution for MPD Director Community Forum

On April 2, MICAH convened a Prayer Vigil at the I Am A Man Plaza. In light of the selection of a new Memphis Police Department Director, MICAH’s vigil provided an opportunity for the community to come together to cry out in prayer about past and current injustices and proclaim hope for a better, more just future. Because of you, MICAH was seen and heard.

Since the vigil, The Mayor's office has added one more finalist and has pushed the date back to present his final candidate for MPD Director to the City Council for their approval.

On Monday, April 19, Mayor Strickland announced his selection of Durham Police Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis to be the next Memphis Police Department Director. The City Council will have to vote to approve/deny this appointment and there is concern that all interviews were held behind closed doors.

On Tuesday, April 20, Councilwoman Easter-Thomas presented a resolution to the entire City Council with high hopes of garnishing support for a community forum with the MPD Director nominee. A virtual, live-streamed community forum would provide an opportunity for the community to submit the questions most pressing to them and have transparency on where the nominee for this important position stands. The resolution passed in committee and will be before the full City Council at 3:30 p.m.

As always, thank you for supporting MICAH and making your voice heard. We couldn’t do this without you, and now more than ever, we must partner for power and act for justice.
