San Francisco is on the verge of a historic decision that could finally make it easier to build more housing -- including in neighborhoods that have long resisted growth.
To meet state housing requirements outlined in our Housing Element, including a goal of permitting 82,000 new homes by 2031 (our RHNA target), the City must update its zoning rules. The Family Zoning Plan is a long-awaited, community-informed proposal that would legalize the kinds of homes San Franciscans need like backyard cottages and in-law units to small apartment buildings and mid-rise housing near transit, schools, and jobs.
This plan reflects years of public engagement, thoughtful planning, and input from the people who actually build affordable housing. But it won’t move forward without strong support from residents like you.
By signing this petition, you’re telling City leaders:
- We need more homes in more neighborhoods, especially in high-opportunity areas that have historically excluded new housing.
- We support a bold, thoughtful plan that meets state housing goals while reflecting our local values.
- We want a San Francisco where families, renters, seniors, and future residents all have a place to call home.
Why This Matters
- It creates more options for families. This plan allows for more flexible housing types like backyard cottages and small apartments so families can stay together, and renters can live closer to schools, jobs, and their communities.
- It prioritizes smart growth. New housing would go near transit, schools, parks, and local businesses, exactly where we should be growing.
- It protects critical funding. Cities that fail to comply with state housing law risk losing money for transit, affordable housing, and infrastructure.
Send your letter and help ensure the Family Zoning Plan becomes moves forward. Let’s show our leaders that San Franciscans are ready to say YES to more homes and a better future for all.
