We must urge the Cameron County Commissioners to vote against a tax break for Texas LNG and Rio Grande LNG. We can’t allow gas plants that pollute the Rio Grande Valley, destroy wetlands, and bulldoze sacred Indigenous lands. We can't allow Texas LNG and Rio Grande LNG to avoid paying hundreds of millions of dollars to Cameron County.

Cameron County should reject the Texas LNG and Rio Grande LNG tax abatement applications because there is tremendous opposition to the LNG project in the Rio Grande Valley. The communities of South Padre Island, Port Isabel, Laguna Vista, Long Island Village, and Laguna Heights oppose the LNG projects because it would destroy wildlife habitat, damage the fishing & shrimping economy, and threaten public safety.

The Point Isabel Independent School District (PIISD), which serves the Port Isabel communities, rejected a tax abatement from the school for Texas LNG and Rio Grande LNG because of local opposition against the projects. Cameron County should follow the direction of Point Isabel ISD and deny the tax abatement for LNG projects.

Cameron County Commissioners should not give away tax dollars to the failed Texas LNG and Rio Grande LNG projects. Texas LNG lost a bank, French bank BNP Paribas, years ago because the bank updated its policy and withdrew from all gas projects because they are damaging to the climate. Another bank called Societe Generale also withdrew from Rio Grande LNG because of the climate crisis. The regulator, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), also faces a lawsuit for cutting corners while reviewing the LNG permit applications.

Texas LNG plans to bulldoze an Indigenous historic site called “Garcia Pasture,” which contains ancestral burial sites, villages, and artifacts that are sacred to the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas. Garcia Pasture is also recognized by the National Park Service and designed as an endangered site by the World Monuments Fund. Cameron County should not give a tax subsidy to the Texas LNG project because it would incentivize the LNG company to destroy part of the community’s ancestral heritage.

Tell Cameron County that these billion-dollar fossil fuel corporations should pay their fair share of taxes to our low-income community.
