🚸 Safety Can't Wait

The city of our dreams is one in which walking across a street doesn't risk putting you in an ambulance in critical condition or worse. Last week, a driver making a left turn onto Huron from 5th Ave critically inured a pedestrian. On this three-block stretch of Huron in front of City Hall, drivers have killed and seriously injured multiple people. City Council has recognized the dangers of multilane roads citywide (giving rise to the Ann Arbor Roadway Rightsizing project, “A2R2”) and two years ago directed the City Administrator to begin negotiations to take over Huron St and all of the state roadways in the city so that we can implement safety improvements.  

Here are some ways you can get involved:

1. Rally in front of City Hall, Tuesday, September 22. Advocates on bicycles will meet on the bikeway at Division and Packard at 5:45pm, ride north to the Broadway bridge, and then end at City Hall by 6:30pm. They'll join others in front of Larcom City Hall at 6:30pm, then go upstairs for the City Council meeting at 6:50pm. There will be pizza and snacks to sustain speakers throughout the meeting.

2. Sign up to speak at the Council meeting. Call or visit the City Clerk's Office on Tuesday 8am-4pm: (734) 794-6140. Speaker order is randomized within priority groups, so you don't need to be first in line—just call before 4pm. If you call between 4pm and 5pm, you can still be added to the end of the list. Road safety isn’t technically on that meeting agenda, so when the clerk asks for the topic of the comment, you can say something like, “Transportation Safety Now” or something else that you like. To speak remotely, sign up the same way, then call into Zoom at 7:00 p.m.: 877-853-5247 or 888-788-0099, Meeting ID 942 1273 2148. Give the Clerk's Office the phone number you'll be calling from when you sign up.

3. Fil out this easy form, or email or call your Council representatives. Personal stories carry a lot of weight. A short, personal message explaining why you support safe roads in general or citing specific instances of danger you’ve encountered goes a long way. If you prefer to send your own email, address it to all of them: citycouncil@a2gov.org.

4. Spread the word. After you fill out this form, you will find tools to share this call to action with neighbors, friends who like to walk, bike, and ride the bus, or anyone who wants to travel safely in our community.

• Walk Bike Washtenaw's Call to Action for roadway safety and the expansion of the Division St. cycletrack. Attend the project open house on Wednesday, September 23, 5-7pm at the DDA Office. The DDA office is in the Kerrytown Shops, 2nd Floor (next to V2V Clothing Boutique). You can review the draft plan for improvements; it has changed even since the first walking tour.
