Congress failed to pass a premium tax credit extension before year’s end in 2025. This means the enhanced premium tax credits that significantly lowered Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace insurance premiums expired on December 31, 2025.

The House of Representatives has already passed legislation to extend these tax credits. Now the Senate must act.

The enhanced premium tax credits have helped people stay insured and avoid crushing medical bills. Without renewal:

• Premiums rise immediately for anyone who buys their own coverage.

• Working families and small business owners, as well as their employees, are hit hardest.

• Lower enrollment drives up costs for everyone, not just ACA enrollees.
