Tell Congress: Rein in the Insurrection Act and End Trump’s War on Cities

Donald Trump has already deployed the National Guard into American cities, but he’s not done yet.
Trump has repeatedly hinted that he’ll invoke the Insurrection Act to federalize National Guard troops and assign the military to enforce the law. It’s all about intimidation and control.
The Insurrection Act is a 200-year-old law that gives presidents sweeping power to deploy troops on U.S. soil. Trump’s attempt to twist it into a weapon against protesters and political opponents is a direct threat to democracy. Unless Congress steps in, Trump — and future presidents — could use the same power to silence dissent anywhere, anytime.
Tell Congress: “Update the Insurrection Act to protect our freedoms and end Trump’s war on American cities.”
NBC News reports that Trump’s advisers are already drafting orders to override governors and occupy more Democratic-led cities. It’s an assault on the rights and freedoms of every American.
Congress must act immediately to reform the Insurrection Act. Lawmakers should require congressional approval for any troop deployment beyond 14 days, allow courts to block illegal uses of force, and make clear that peaceful protests can never be grounds for military action. They must also mandate public transparency whenever the Act is invoked.
These commonsense reforms are essential to safeguard democracy and prevent abuse. It’s up to us to show Congress that we won’t let Trump turn the military against our own people.
