Federal wildland firefighters engage in dangerous operations outside of active wildfires, including firefighters assigned to prescribed burns and smokejumpers performing training jumps. Both of these activities should receive hazard pay, however, they currently do not. The Wildland Firefighter Hazard Pay Correction Act (H.R. 5091) would codify into law hazard pay for prescribed fires and proficiency jumps.
