Tell Congress to extend the ACA Premium Tax Credits now

Every family deserves access to affordable, quality health care. But unless Congress acts now, millions of Americans will lose the coverage they count on when enhanced Affordable Care Act (ACA) premium tax credits expire on January 1, 2026.

Congress and the White House promised they would reduce health care costs, but because Republicans refused to extend the Affordable Care Act premium tax subsidies, people will lose part—or all—of the subsidy they currently use to pay for their health care premiums. As a result, healthier people will drop out because of the higher cost while sicker people remain, causing costs to rise for insurers.

In response, health insurance companies just requested premium increases averaging 20% for 2026. Out of the 325 health insurers that participate in the federally run ACA marketplace, 125 of them have requested premium increases higher than the average, ranging from 20% to 50% or more.

All of this could have been avoided if Congress served the majority of the people, instead of providing tax handouts to the ultra-wealthy.

A recent letter from Senator Jeanne Shaheen and colleagues underscores that the Big Brutal Bill slashed over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA.

According to the letter:

While Republicans in the House and Senate chose to extend nearly $4 trillion in tax cuts to benefit the ultra-wealthy and big corporations, they did not extend enhanced premium tax credits that almost 20 million middle-class and working Americans rely on. These expanded tax credits, which lower the cost of health care for individuals and families who use the ACA Marketplace, will expire at the end of the calendar year. Failure to extend these tax credits will cause premiums to skyrocket … beginning January 1, 2026.”

Americans cannot afford to face skyrocketing health care costs while the cost of living continues to outpace wages. Congress must fix this when it gets back from their August recess.
