Note: This action is for non DC residents who have representatives who can vote on these bills.

As the country watches LA bravely fight off ICE and the military, Congress is quietly attempting to strip away DC’s sanctuary laws that keep us safe. Since the residents of DC do not have representation, we need your help to stop them! Non-DC residents, take five minutes TODAY to send a letter and call your representative and ask them to vote NO on these bills and on any bill that undermines DC’s autonomy! And please share this toolkit with all your friends and family!

On Tuesday, dozens of Democrats betrayed DC and voted alongside Republicans to pass two bills that will overturn DC laws – one that takes away noncitizens rights to vote in local elections and another that takes away the DC government's power to discipline DC cops. Today, they are taking aim at DC’s sanctuary laws and voting on the District of Columbia Federal Immigration Compliance Act of 2025 (HR 2056). This bill will overturn DC’s Sanctuary Values Act (SVA) which bars DC agencies and police from sharing information about our residents with ICE without a judicial warrant and stops the DC jail from detaining people on behalf of ICE on administrative warrants. The SVA was unanimously passed by our elected representatives in 2020, and represents the will of the people of the District. Now, Congress wants to overturn it. And because DC has never been granted statehood and continues to be occupied by the federal government, they have the power to. This is why we need your support to stop them.

DC is already the most policed city per capita in the country, and that statistic doesn’t even include the 30+ federal law enforcement agencies that operate in the District as well. We need your support to stop Congress from giving ICE and local police more power to harm our communities. Take action NOW!

More info on the bills passed yesterday:

HR 884 repeals DC’s law that allows noncitizens to vote in our local elections, thereby further disenfranchising an already disenfranchised people. DC’s Local Resident Voting Rights Act, which this bill overturns, passed in 2023 unanimously.

The Protecting Our Nation’s Capital Emergency Act (HR 2096) takes away the local DC government's ability to discipline DC police officers, and puts that power in the hands of the notorious police union. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has a long history of violent behavior. Since 2013, they have killed 35 people, 15 in the last five years. They also have a history of supporting and protecting far-right extremists. In fact, a few days ago a former lieutenant of MPD’s intelligence unit was sentenced to prison after he leaked information to the Proud Boys. Trump has already undermined DC’s ability to hold killer cops accountable when he pardoned Karon Hylton’s murderers — now Congress is undermining it more. The racial justice implications are so clear.

The fight is not over on these bills! We still have time to stop them in the senate.
