Tell Congress to Protect Immigrant Children in Public Schools

A coordinated national effort is underway to strip immigrant children of their right to attend public school.

In Congress, lawmakers are advancing arguments and legislation aimed at overturning Plyler v. Doe, the Supreme Court decision that guarantees all children access to public K–12 education regardless of immigration status. At the same time, states are moving forward with proposals that would allow schools to deny enrollment or charge tuition to immigrant students.

If these efforts succeed, schools across the country could begin requiring immigration documentation, tracking students’ status, and excluding children from classrooms.

The consequences would be immediate and far-reaching. Students would be pushed out of school. Families would face fear and uncertainty. Entire communities would feel the impact as school systems lose stability and resources.

Public education has long been rooted in a simple principle: every child deserves the opportunity to learn. Overturning Plyler v. Doe would abandon that principle and open the door to widespread exclusion.

Congress must reject any bill that undermines this protection.
