Tell Governor DeSantis to Stop the Execution of James Duckett
James Duckett is scheduled for execution on July 28 at 12pm. This is Mr. Duckett's second execution date, after his first was stayed to allow for DNA testing.
Mr. Duckett has maintained his innocence since the beginning of the case. The prosecution’s theory was entirely circumstantial and rested on several pieces of evidence that have since come under serious doubt. The jury recognized this, as they were split 8 to 4 when voting for a death sentence.
The State’s key eyewitness later recanted her testimony, stating that investigators pressured her and suggested what she should say. Without that testimony, the central claim becomes deeply uncertain. To make matters worse, DNA evidence that could have proven his innocence was recently destroyed during a testing process that prosecutors knew could yield inadequate results.
If this execution is carried out, any opportunity to fully uncover the truth will be lost forever. Please send Gov. Ron DeSantis a letter asking him to use his executive authority to halt this execution.
