Tell Governor Spanberger to Sign These Bills
Urge Governor Spanberger to stop on-duty law-enforcement from masking and require them to display identification.
We are proud of our legislators for passing and refusing to amend HB1482 and SB352.*
As drafted by the legislators, these bills will prevent on–duty law enforcement from concealing their identities (with very limited exceptions). Failing to comply with these provisions can be a crime.
Face Masks. Law enforcement officers will be prohibited from covering their faces, with exceptions for health, safety, and and specific undercover duties.
Identification. Officers will also be required to display a badge or insignia in most circumstances that bears: 1) the officer's name or other individual identifier and 2) the name of the law-enforcement agency that employs the officer.
Governor Spanberger has told the legislature that she approves the general purpose of these bills. But she proposed eliminating: 1) the identification requirement and 2) the potential criminal penalty for non-compliance.
The General Assembly rejected the Governor’s proposed changes.
Tell her to sign the original bills into law!
*NOTE: The Governor's changes to these bills were rejected by the Legislature on April 22-23. They now go back to the Governor, who has 30 days to either Sign or Veto them. For the sake of our immigrant neighbors, she needs to sign these bills.
