Tell Kentucky’s Representatives: Reject Cuts to Medicaid and SNAP that Fund Tax Cuts for the Wealthy

All across Kentucky, families are doing what it takes to care for loved ones and keep food on the table. But even as our communities take on new challenges to keep up with the high cost of living, many lawmakers in Washington are pushing dangerous policies that take direct aim at our wallets.

The U.S. Senate recently passed legislation that would terminate health coverage and take food assistance away from hundreds of thousands of Kentuckians, all to offset a small portion of the cost of cutting taxes for the wealthy. If this bill becomes law, it would amount to the largest ever funding cut to both Medicaid and the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

More than one-in-three Kentuckians relies on Medicaid. SNAP, meanwhile, helps more than 575,800 with their food budgets. Both would see deep cuts under this plan and the harms would go far beyond those kicked off of the programs, putting the very existence of rural hospitals and grocery stores at risk.

These cuts are being proposed because many politicians in Washington want to extend key parts of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy. As a state where more than a million people rely on these vital federal programs, Kentucky would be left sicker, hungrier and poorer by these cruel and unnecessary changes.
