Urge your state and US lawmakers to support the removal of the $900million line item for the rebuilds of Stateville and Logan Correctional Centers from the Capital Development Budget this legislative session. This rebuild proposal or “RISE IDOC”, is a high-cost, low-impact project, it will not solve the problems of inhumane prison conditions, it is a misguided attempt to criminal justice reform, and it lacks transparency and meaningful community engagement. Ultimately, the RISE IDOC proposal is a false promise.

1. Given IDOC’s practice of deferred maintenance and inhumane conditions, there is little evidence IDOC will be able to implement their vision.
2. While the governor and state legislature have approved $900 million for the rebuilds, the total cost will greatly exceed this figure.
