Tell lawmakers to choose classrooms over tax cuts for the wealthiest and instead invest an additional $718 million in Kentucky's public schools.

Kentuckians proved—again—that we believe in strong public schools. Building on the momentum of the Amendment 2 victory, Protect Our Schools KY is calling on the General Assembly to make a bold, common-sense reinvestment: add $718 million a year to K–12—the same amount currently being steered toward more income-tax cuts.

Rather than giving $718 million more each year in tax breaks for the wealthy, let's put that money where it helps every community: in our public schools.

What this smart reinvestment can do:

  • Smaller classes & more attention: Raise SEEK base funding by 14% so every student gets the time, materials, and opportunities they deserve.

  • Safe, on-time buses: Fully fund school transportation for the first time since 2004.

  • Real tools for learning: Restore $38 million for textbooks, teacher training, and classroom technology.

  • People power: Enable ~8% raises for teachers, bus drivers, and school staff and add 2,600+ educators—including preschool and mental health supports.

  • Stronger basics: Invest $59 million in FRYSCs, school meals, bus drivers, and afterschool programs.

Why now:

  • KY ranks 48th in starting teacher pay and 49th in support staff pay.

  • 1 in 5 Kentucky kids struggles with hunger.

  • State education funding is down 24% (inflation-adjusted) since 2008, and gaps between poor and wealthy districts now exceed levels ruled unconstitutional in 1989.

It would take $1.3 billion a year to fully restore 2008-level funding; $718 million is a bold first step—more than halfway back on track.
