Tell Mayor Carstarphen: Camden City Residents Should Not Pay Politicians' Legal Bills

At their August 13th meeting, Camden City Council members approved an ordinance that would make residents responsible for paying the legal fees of local politicians facing criminal charges. Instead of making officials pay for their own legal defense, the city's taxpayers would foot the bill! This would be galling in any community but especially in the economically disadvantaged city of Camden.
Why did city council take this action? Well, it's important to consider the following:
- Two months ago, former Camden Mayor Dana Redd was indicted on racketeering charges along with George Norcross, his brother Phil Norcross, and other members of the "Norcross Enterprise."
- This ordinance was introduced by Camden Councilman Arthur Barclay. Last summer, Councilman Barclay faced charges for hitting a woman with his car. In 2018, Arthur Barclay, then an Assemblyman, stepped down from office while facing domestic violence charges.
Please join us in telling Camden City Mayor Vic Carstarphen to veto this deeply problematic piece of legislation. The Norcross machine has been preying on our tax dollars for far too long. The public should not be paying politicians’ criminal defense fees.
