Tell McGill administration to stop enabling B’nai Brith’s bullying and defend its students

Take one minute and write a letter to McGill Principal and Vice-Chancellor Suzanne Fortier.

On Wednesday, July 27, B’nai B’rith announced a lawsuit against the McGill administration, Student Society of McGill University (SSMU) and student group Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights McGill. The Israel lobby group complained that undergraduate students were asked to vote on whether they supported Palestinian rights. B’nai Brith’s press release communicated that their suit was a way to deter student democracy at universities across the country.

In March 71% of students voted for a Palestine Solidarity Policy committing SSMU to divest from and boycott “corporations and institutions complicit in settler-colonial apartheid against Palestinians.” In response to the student vote, B’nai Brith called on the administration to sever SSMU’s funding. Shortly after, McGill’s administration threatened to terminate its Memorandum of Agreement with the student union, which regulates fees and other matters between the university and SSMU. The McGill student union bowed to the pressure and withdrew the widely supported resolution.

By repeatedly conceding to B’nai Brith’s bullying McGill’s administration has emboldened the pro-Israel lobby group. Anti-Palestinian racism must end. The McGill administration should defend its students from the pro-Israel group's latest attack against student democracy.

Join rock legend Roger Waters, who penned a public letter in support of McGill students sued by B’nai B’rith, to tell McGill administration to stop enabling B’nai Brith’s bullying.

More than 25 universities across Canada have passed BDS oriented resolutions. Over the last few weeks, motions have been passed at five universities including McGill, Concordia, UBC, Simon Fraser and University of Toronto.
