Tell Nassau Co. Executive Laura Curran: Veto Josh Lafazan's Unconstitutional Legislation
On Monday, August 2, the Nassau County Legislature passed dangerous and unconstitutional legislation, introduced by Legislator Josh Lafazan, that would allow police officers -- who already have been granted "protected class" status under the county's human rights law -- to sue individuals for damages of up to $50,000 if they feel "harassed,"
a term loosely defined in the legislation.
The legislation violates the constitutions of the United States and New York State, and it is a clear attempt to muzzle free speech and silence protestors following thousands of Black Lives Matter protests last year.
The racist legislation is also a slap in the face to Long Island's historically marginalized communities as it puts police officers -- a chosen profession -- in the same category as Black, Asian, Indigenous, Latino, LGBTQ people, Muslims, Jewish people and women.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran must veto this legislation.
