Tell Sam Smith's Team: Don't Cross the Picket Line
On May 31st, Sam Smith is scheduled to headline the Summer in the City festival in Tel Aviv, Israel.
We need your help to write to Sam’s agent and urge them to cancel Sam’s performance.
By playing in Tel Aviv, Sam will be crossing a picket line: disregarding the Palestinian call to boycott Israel until Palestinians have full equality, freedom, and the right to return to their homeland.
Many artists and musicians, including Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Lauryn Hill, and most recently Big Thief (a band that includes the child of a well known Israeli musician), have canceled performances in order to respect the call for a cultural boycott of Israel.
Sam has said "at its core [this tour] is about freedom." The best way to truly promote freedom is to cancel their performance in Tel Aviv.
For decades, the Palestinian people have been subjected to military occupation, displacement, and discrimination at the hands of the Israeli government. The ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestine, including the blockade of Gaza and the unequal laws for Palestinian citizens of Israel, has resulted in the denial of basic freedoms for millions of people.
To share just a few examples: millions of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are unable to vote for the government that controls their daily lives; they can be subjected to “administrative detention” and be imprisoned in Israeli jails for years without charges; and if they do go to trial, they go to a military court run by Israel that exclusively tries Palestinians and has a conviction rate over 99%.
The situation has been recognized as apartheid for decades by Palestinians and more recently by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.
The international movement to boycott Israel is one of the most powerful tools we have to curtail human rights abuses and fight for a better future.
If Sam decides to cancel their show in Israel, they will bring hope to millions of people around the world who want a better future. They would help prove that our movement is growing because people of conscience are learning the reality that Palestinians live through. They would help bring us that much closer to the world we are trying to build together.
Please write to Sam’s team directly and ask them to stand in solidarity with all Palestinians fighting for their freedom and dignity.
