Tell Seattle Lawmakers: Sustain Investments in Food Security
We need YOU to tell the Seattle City Council to sustain critical investments in Food Security included in the Mayor’s budget.
The 58 members of the Meals Partnership Coalition (MPC) are the frontline of defense against hunger in Seattle. MPC members produce more than 5,000,000 meals every year to ensure everyone in Seattle has access to a nutritionally dense, culturally uplifting meal.
Our mission is being threatened. Our State and Federal government in recent years have made deep cuts to hot meal program funding, leaving tens of thousands of Seattle residents at risk of hunger. This comes on top of a significant revenue shortfall in the City of Seattle budget. If we do not defend local investments in food security, everyone in our great city will be less safe and secure.
Fortunately, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson has proposed a City budget that balances its deficit while sustaining core investments in human service programs. Specifically, the proposed budget sustains funding for a $1,000,000 ongoing investment in meal programs that was previously provided with one time funding. The Mayor’s proposed budget represents the largest investment in community meal programs ever proposed by the City.
As members of the Seattle City Council consider changes they want to make to the Mayor’s budget, we need to make sure that this life affirming funding for community safety and wellbeing is preserved. We need your help to ensure that this hard fought investment is included in the final budget.
