In Rhode Island, the Narragansett Town Council recently voted to offer free beach permits to members of the Narragansett Indian Tribe members. The towns of Truro and Wellfleet in Cape Cod will begin offering free permits to anyone with proof of tribal identification this summer. The Southampton Village Board of Trustees should follow suit and allow free beach access to Shinnecock Nation members.

The Shinnecock never relinquished the rights to use oceans and beaches. Therefore, they should not be forced to pay prohibitive fees.
