Mayor Bowser’s proposed FY27 budget would begin the unraveling of DC child care. It would eliminate pay equity for 4,000 early educators, meaning salary cuts by as much as $25,000. She is proposing to cap child care subsidies at 6,000 children even though 7,300 are currently enrolled. That means working families could be frozen out of affordable child care for as long as a year and a half.

These proposals are cruel to District families doing their best to raise their kids in the District while also making ends meet. It would push early educators out of the workforce, put more pressure on child care businesses operating on the slimmest of margins, and hurt young children by separating them from trusted early educators.

Now the DC Council must decide what kind of city DC will be.

Email the Council now and demand that they act to protect child care access and educator pay in the FY27 budget.
