Tell the GRU Authority to Respect Gainesville Voters

On April 2nd, Judge George Wright ruled from the bench on the GRU Authority’s lawsuit against the city seeking to invalidate the 2024 Local Public Utilities referendum, which would restore home rule over GRU. He ruled that City voters can amend their City Charter and that the City Commission may put amendment proposals on the ballot. However, he also ruled that the ballot summary language was misleading on grammatical grounds. In other words, the 2024 referendum was invalidated, but a do-over referendum can be held.

That wasn’t good enough for the GRU Authority, who voted the following day to appeal the Judge’s ruling that city voters have a right to self-governance. Please email the GRU Authority to tell them to respect the will of nearly 73% of voters who voted to abolish the Governor-appointed Authority and drop their appeal.
