Tell the Senate: Don’t Make Air Dirty Again

Last Thursday, the House voted to overturn California’s – and other states’ – leadership on cleaner cars. Climate hawks though this bill was dead in the Senate, because we expected the Senate to listen to its own parliamentarian.

The bad news: As we predicted: Republicans in Congress voted in lockstep to Make Air Dirty Again. H.Res. 87 will seek to stop California’s sale of zero-emission trucks (passed 231-191), and H.Res. 89 will attempt to forbid California from tightening up nitrous oxide emission standards (passed 225-196). The worse news: 36 Democrats, including two California Democrats (Lou Correa and George Whitesides) voted with Republicans in attempting to revoke California’s right to ban the sale of gas-powered cars by 2035.

The good news: We expect that most Senate Democrats will stand up for clean air, though some of them may need reminders. And forcing Republican to vote for dirty air gives us a chance to convince the convince-able moderates, and make the true MAGA minions look cruel and foolish.

The rule-breaking part: even though the Senate parliamentarian has already ruled that these resolutions cannot be brought under the Congressional Review Act, Senate Republicans like Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia want to overrule their own parliamentarian.

This is an all hawks on deck moment to squawk up! No matter what what party - your Senators need to know you're watching their vote and that breaking the rules to vote for dirty air is unacceptable. Take a moment to write your Senators in favor of cleaner cars, cleaner air and more.
