Tell the IEA: Ignore Chris Wright’s Threats, Follow the Science on Climate Change

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright

The International Energy Agency (IEA) is one of the world’s most important sources of independent analysis on energy and climate. Its research has helped governments, companies, and advocates understand exactly what it will take to power our world without cooking the planet.

But now, Donald Trump’s Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, is reportedly demanding that the IEA “drop” its focus on climate change — even threatening to pull the United States out of the agency unless it “reforms” the way it operates.

That’s outrageous.

The IEA was founded after the 1973 oil crisis to coordinate global responses to major disruptions in energy supplies. Today, climate change is one of the biggest disruptions of all — destabilizing economies, intensifying extreme weather, and threatening global security. Trying to strong-arm the agency into ignoring that reality isn’t leadership. It’s bullying.

The IEA comprises 32 member countries. The United States is just one of them. No single government should be allowed to pressure the entire agency into abandoning science-based climate analysis that is essential to the world's future.

The IEA’s climate and clean energy work isn’t advocacy — it’s rigorous analysis that helps nations make smarter, safer, more secure energy decisions. Telling the IEA to “drop” climate from its mission would weaken global cooperation and hand fossil fuel interests exactly what they want: delay, denial, and more pollution.

Communities worldwide are already paying the price — with record heat, floods, wildfires, drought, and rising seas.

Energy security and climate action are inseparable. Investing in renewables, efficiency, and innovation strengthens economies and protects people.

The IEA Governing Board must stand strong. Defend the agency’s independence. Protect and expand its climate research. And send a clear message that the world will not abandon efforts to confront the climate crisis.

Send the IEA Governing Board an email today to tell them: Keep climate at the center of your mission — and don’t let anyone “drop” it.
