Hello,

The Ohio EPA has just announced the release of the draft renewal permit for Alterra Energy, Ohio’s oldest plastic burning facility in Akron, OH. Alterra releases tons of toxic chemicals known to cause respiratory and reproductive illnesses, heart disease, and cancer every year. Despite failing to complete successful EPA air pollution tests, Alterra continues to pollute East Akron, threatening the health of many families who live nearby.

The new draft permit would allow Alterra to emit much more pollution than their current permit: 35 tons of nitrogen oxide, 34 tons of volatile organic compounds, and 13 tons of carbon monoxide into East Akron every year. People living in East Akron already have higher rates of asthma and heart disease than 90% of the country.

Alterra’s facility is a major environmental justice concern, and the company is already planning on expanding their operations into Pennsylvania. The best chance we have to hold Alterra accountable for their toxic pollution and make sure that East Akronites have breathable air is to submit a public comment during this 30 day open comment period ending June 4th. You don't have to live in Akron to submit a comment - so please take action and help us spread the word!

Sign and send a comment now or do so directly through the Ohio EPA’s website.
