Tell Utah Legislature: Save the Great Salt Lake & Protect Our Health
The Great Salt Lake is experiencing water levels decline because of increased water usage in agriculture and communities. And climate change is making it worse. This decrease is causing many problems in the ecosystem, our environment, our economy, and our health in the Salt Lake Valley.
One major issue is that the air quality is getting worse. As the lake shrinks, more of the lakebed is exposed, allowing wind to pick up dust and heavy metals from the dry lakebed. This leads to higher levels of particulate matter (PM) in the air, specifically PM 2.5 and PM 10. These tiny particles can cause serious health problems, including reduced lung function, asthma, chronic pulmonary disorders, cancer, and diabetes.
To protect our health and our communities in the Salt Lake Valley, it's important to increase the Great Salt Lake's water levels. A healthy lake level is considered to be at least 4200 feet.
The Utah legislature needs to support legislations that encourage water-saving farming practices and reduce water consumption.
