Tell your governor: No tax breaks for Big Tech data centers

When Big Tech receives tax breaks for data center construction, our communities pay—and in more ways than one.

Local budgets lose out on billions of dollars in tax revenue, forcing schools to cut programs, such as assistance for children with disabilities, or fire teachers, making classroom sizes bigger.

Our land and water get sucked up, our electricity bills get hiked, and our local economies get nothing but a temporary sugar rush.

Dozens of states across the country fork over billions in tax breaks to attract data centers to their communities. Some, like Texas, have given more than $1 billion in tax breaks.

In Illinois, a Microsoft data center got more than $38 million in tax exemptions—putting Big Tech profits over local community needs. The handouts they’re receiving are massive hits to tax revenue that should be used for our schools, roads, infrastructure, and local programs. Our communities can’t afford to subsidize AI data centers that take so much and give so little.

We demand guardrails against this corporate greed.
