The Alabama Housing Trust Fund was established in 2012 through the Alabama Affordable Housing Act. Since being established it has never seen a dollar of funding. This flexible and impactful resource would be the beginning to address the housing crisis in Alabama. Over the last decade, the affordable housing crisis has gotten worse in Alabama. There is an increasing shortage of more than 94,000 affordable homes in the state, which is causing many Alabamians to spend a major portion of their income on housing. We are the 3rd most dependent state on Federal Housing Resources for home development and stability sources. We are slated to lose 12,000 units of rural housing in the next 10 years, at minimum. With eviction rates continuing to rise, homeless and housing instability unable to returned to pre-Covid rates, it is crucial for our state lawmakers to act. Now is the time for our state leaders to responds to community needs and be proactive to the housing crisis before it grows worse.
