SB 233 is a dangerous voucher bill that may soon be voted on in the Georgia House of Representatives. Vouchers divert public funds from public schools.
This public funds drainer—costing at least $190 million at full implementation—comes at a time when Georgia schools, in general, are struggling to retain employees, are shouldering the cost of an aging bus fleet and are facing a 67 percent increase in State Health Benefit Plan costs for bus drivers, cafeteria workers and other critical staff.
The schools targeted by this bill—those in the bottom 25% of schools according to the College and Career Readiness Performance Index (CCRPI)—are even more dependent on public funds and located in districts experiencing low property tax wealth and high poverty.
The schools whose students would be eligible for this funds-draining program are also overwhelmingly Black. These school districts and the students they serve can ill afford a bill like this that siphons funds away from schools that must pay fixed costs like building maintenance and capital improvements, as well as classroom supplies and other vital materials teachers need to serve students.
