DC has 700,000 residents who pay federal taxes, serve in the military, raise families, and have called the nation’s capital home for generations. Yet, DC has no voting representation in Congress, and no protection from a federal government that can override their locally-passed laws, gut their local budget, and ignore their democratic decisions at will.

This has been an ongoing injustice, and it’s getting worse as we collectively experience escalating attacks on democracy.

The escalating interference by Congress in DC’s local governance is the worst we have seen in nearly three decades. The tactics being used to undermine DC are not just harmful to DC. They are part of a broader playbook for hollowing out democracy that does not stop at DC’s borders.

Together for DC is a national solidarity movement, led by DC residents and neighbors nationwide, who believe that when democracy is undermined in the nation’s capital, it is undermined everywhere. All of us have a stake in fighting back.
