Tell NY state legislators: Ultra-millionaires should pay their fair share to help fund our schools
New York is often considered a beacon of progressiveness – but New Yorkers know that there’s much more to be done. New York has the highest income inequality of all fifty states, with deep racial disparities. Many of our cities have child poverty rates at or near fifty percent.
Our schools, universities, health care system and transportation networks are creaking under the strain of longstanding underfunding. Local governments that pick up where the state has fallen short wind up with unsustainably high property taxes and fees, while those that can’t find they have diminished or inadequate public services.
It’s time to chart a different course. Creating a tax system where the wealthiest New Yorkers pay their fair share would make an enormous difference. It would give our state the resources it needs to bring our public services and infrastructure up to world-class standards.
New York already has a tax on millionaires, and since it was instituted the number of millionaires in the state has grown by seventy-two percent. New York has enough to offer that the wealthy want to live here even if real estate costs and taxes are higher than other places they might choose. Now we should extend that tax to have brackets for those with incomes over $5 million, $10 million, and $100 million.
While raising taxes on the wealthiest and out-of-state corporations may seem simple, it’s not always an easy vote for legislators to take.
That’s why your legislators need to hear from you!
Please take a moment to send your legislators an email letting them know you have their back when it comes to creating a fair tax system that raises enough revenue to meet the needs of our states struggling families.
