Tell your State Senator to Support and Fast Track MA Bill 2183 (Elevate Mass National Guard to a Cabinet Position)

Massachusetts National Guard

The Trump administration has threatened to deploy MA National Guard troops into Boston for law enforcement. While this does not appear imminent, Boston's Mayor Michelle Wu has been making preparations for that possibility for the last few weeks (see https://www.wgbh.org/news/politics/2025-08-26/bostons-mayor-bracing-for-potential-national-guard-deployment).

Currently the Adjutant General (head of the Mass National Guard) must report to several levels of Massachusetts government bureaucracy before having direct access to the Governor.

Passing MA Bill 2183 (An Act Elevating The National Guard to a Cabinet Level Position) would elevate the position of the Adjutant General to cabinet level so that they can work more closely with the Massachusetts Governor. This would give the Governor greater command and control of the MA National Guard. It would potentially strengthen the Governor's response to any attempt by the federal government to deploy National Guard troops in Boston.

If you have concerns about a possible deployment of the Federal National Guard in Massachusetts, write to your MA State Senator and ask them to Support and Fast Track MA Bill 2183 (An Act Elevating The National Guard to a Cabinet Level Position). The bill is currently in the Senate Ways and Means Committee. Showing support across Massachusetts will make a big difference in whether the bill is passed. This bill must be passed soon as a part of preparing for possible troop deployment in our communities.
