Tennis Federation Must Suspend Kuwaiti Player Who Boycotted Israeli Athlete

Muhammad al-Awadi, a Kuwaiti tennis player has refused to face his Israeli counterpart in the Dubai Tennis Championships U-14 .

This constitutes severe discrimination against Israelis due to political boycotts that have no place in sports.

The ITF Code of Ethics specifically rejects this type of discrimination in Article 2.1.2.2:

" not discriminating improperly against or denigrating anyone on grounds of race, colour, sex, gender, sexual orientation, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, disability, or any other unlawful ground"

In a recent case, following the cancellation of the Squash championship in Malaysia due to that country’s boycott of Israeli athletes, the IOC said the heads of sports federations must make sure to receive written assurances from the governments hosting tournaments that all eligible athletes and teams will be able to compete and be treated equally without any political discrimination, and to make sure those assurances are implemented.

Therefore, we urge Tennis Federations to ban or suspend Muhammad al-Awadi from all Asian Tennis Federation, International Tennis Federation and International Olympic Committee tournaments.
